A Living Mural for Mohican State Park’s Young Explorers
On August 12, Ohio State Parks officially opened the brand-new Mohican State Park Visitors Center, a welcoming gateway to one of the state’s most treasured natural areas. Mohican State Park, located in north-central Ohio near Loudonville, covers over 1,100 acres of forested trails, the scenic Clear Fork of the Mohican River, and rich wildlife habitats. Beloved for its dramatic hemlock gorges, outdoor recreation, and year-round camping, the park draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Inside the new center, guests will find a family-friendly interactive children’s space with a camping theme, designed by MDC Design Studio in collaboration with Ohio State Parks staff. A camper “play house” sits beneath a sweeping mural inspired by Mohican’s forests and waterways, and Workinman Interactive’s Digital Exhibits Team was brought in to make part of that mural truly come alive.
Nature That Kids Can Bring to Life
At the picnic-table art station, young visitors can choose from a variety of native species found throughout the park: dragonflies, trout, tree leaves, and flowering riverside flora. After coloring their creations, they head to the digital scanning station. In an instant their artwork transforms into lively animations that join the mural’s digital scene.
Dragonflies zip across the river surface, trout swim back and forth, and leaves drift gently from the trees above blooming flowers. Every child’s creation becomes part of the living, moving ecosystem, creating an experience that is as personal as it is educational.
